Thurs. 12/10 Rest day in Barra de Navidad

Quiet overnight but kept waking up. After breakfast, I walked to the end of the breakwater, big waves, met Ron there after his morning swim. Picked up laundry, 20p, stopped at grocery for breakfast and on the road supplies, took a siesta, then went to lunch with Sharyn and Kathleen. We watched Ron taking an all afternoon a surfing lesson.  Later we would see Ron's significantly scratched up knees received as a result of his many tries to climb up on the anti skid board surface.  He did manage to surf a couple times for several seconds.  Good thing the instructor gave him with a shirt or his chest would have been equally scratched up.  Saw Amit around town a couple times, maybe looking for another chess match.  Bartered for a dress for Elizabeth at the mercado on the square.  Not sure I got the best deal especially when the lady gave me a free "bonus item".   Later we went to a gringo restaurant and people were not as happy with the food as we were at the previous night's local restaurant.

Some notes:
A year ago, 40-something Ron from Ontario could not swim.  After a few trips to the Pacific Coast and elsewhere  he decided to learn to swim last winter.  Since learning heo did some mini-triathlons and on this trip swims farther and longer in the ocean than anyone else.

Also, a number of gringos and Canadians spend the winter in Barra.  We talked to several at the Hotel and elsewhere.  Sharyn asked the Hotel for the monthly rate which was less than half what we paid, so about $250/month.

This town was hit by an earthquake or two in the 1990's.  As a result, mixed in the the old and new buildings, businesses, residences are damaged structures which have not been rebuilt.
